Chapter Twenty-four

COURTNEY

“Erik, you startled me.” I was standing in front of my husband butt naked, running a fluffy white bath towel over my wet body. I wasn’t expecting him to be home still. Usually, he takes off like a thief in the night early every Sunday morning, so I was really shocked to see him still in bed after I showered.

“Courtney, if I was leaving, you don’t think I would go without saying goodbye, do you?”

I said, “I would hope not,” even though I was thinking, it’s not like you haven’t done it before.

Erik was lying in our bed shirtless with the comforter pulled up to his waist. I wonder if he’s still naked?

“So, what’s on your agenda for the rest of the day, Court?”

I wrapped the towel around my waist as I headed for the bed. I sat down, kissed Erik’s succulent, juicy, moist lips before I answered, “Shopping. Shaun and I need to pick up a few things for Fenmore’s before tomorrow night.”

“So, you and Shaun are speaking again? You know babe, you’ve said some pretty nasty things about him these last few weeks.”

I rolled my eyes. “I know, and he deserved every bit of it, but we’re okay for now. As long as he tries his best to stay out of my business, I will try my best not to fire him.”

“What were you two fighting about anyway?”

I paused for a second. “It doesn’t matter . . . much about nothing.”

I got up and headed to my side of the closet to get dressed.

When Erik came up behind me, his hands landed on my bare shoulders.

“Courtney, . . . I’m ready.”

I turned around to him. “You’re ready for what?”

He turned and walked toward the window. “I want a family of my own, baby. I want to be a dad.” He turned back around to me. “I love our life, Court, but-well, sometimes I feel like something is missing.” He rushed over to me. “You fulfill me in ways I never even imagined possible, but . . . babe, there is still an empty hole inside of me. I-I have everything I’ve ever wanted in life except a baby.”

I didn’t know what to say. I was completely taken aback. And where is all this coming from? Why now? I’m not ready for this . . . We are defiantly not ready for this.

“Tell me what’s on your mind, Courtney. I can see the uneasiness in your face. Talk to me, tell me how you feel.”

“I don’t know how I feel. I-I wasn’t expecting this. A baby? Erik, come on. I just opened my business; you know that. Since Fenmore’s, I’m never home . . . and neither are you.”

“Court, you know I’m working.”

“You’re always working, Erik. And so am I, so when are we going to have time to raise a new baby?”

“Babe, career parents make it work every day.”

I went back to the closet. “Erik, can we talk about this later?” I started pulling clothes off hangers. “This is a big step, and I can’t stand here and give you the answers you’re waiting to hear.
